Port Melbourne is bordered by the shore of Hobsons Bay and the lower reaches of the Yarra River, and includes a large area called Fishermans Bend. The suburb is split between two municipalities. The area to the north of the Westgate Freeway is in the municipality, while the southern part is in the City of Port Phillip. The suburb also forms a major transport corridor from east to west.
The part of Port Melbourne that is located in the municipality does not have any residential areas, and is a predominantly industrial and port area along the Yarra River. The area was originally developed as the city’s second port, linked to the Melbourne CBD. In the last decade, it has undergone intense urban renewal.
Today, the Port of Melbourne is Australia’s largest container and general cargo port and a major gateway to Victoria and the capital city. It operates 24 hours a day.
Although the City of Melbourne portion of the suburb has no residential sites, it does include Westgate Park and some large recreational areas, such as the Kart Raceway and Port Melbourne Cricket Ground.
